After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Caring for the mouth after wisdom teeth are removed

After wisdom tooth removal, the extraction will require patients to follow some post-operative care requirements. The most important requirement is maintaining a clean mouth, which reduces the risk of infection and limits other dental complications that might occur.

Following the removal of wisdom teeth, a gauze pad will be placed over the extraction site. The pad should remain in your mouth for a minimum of 45 minutes following the procedure. Patients will be asked to not drink from a straw or rinse the mouth because it could dislodge the blood clot that has formed over the extraction site. if sutures were used to close the wound, drinking through a straw or rinsing the mouth could also disrupt the sutures and cause more bleeding.

Physical activities will need to be limited for at least 24 hours. All daily routines can be continued the next day. if a pain medication was prescribed, it should be taken to reduce discomfort as the anesthesia slowly wears off.
